FOOTBALL INJURIES
Football is now the most popular sport in the world, with over 240 million registered players worldwide and countless more recreational players. From Saturday kick-abouts to Premiership matches, anyone can play 'the beautiful game'. But as the game becomes more of a contact sport, the risk of injury increases.

Most football injuries are caused by trauma, such as colliding with other players or landing awkwardly, while others can be caused by overuse or aggravating existing injuries. The most frequently affected areas are the lower extremities, such as pelvis and groin, hip and thigh, knee, calf, ankle and foot. Common injuries include the hamstring strain, sprained ankle, damaged knee cartilage, ruptured Achilles tendon, dislocated or separated shoulders and concussion.
Predictably, in a sport where matches require 90 minutes of running, one of the most common injuries in football is the hamstring strain, which occurs when the muscles are overstretched and tear. Warming up can help prevent this, but if you have been unlucky enough to sustain a hamstring strain it's advisable to follow the RICE procedure (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation). Depending on the severity of the injury, you might need to take a break from football for up to three months, but check with your doctor.
Another of the most common football injuries is the sprained ankle, caused by twisting or turning the ankle inwards and sustaining damage to the soft tissue, especially ligaments. This damage then causes bleeding within the tissue, leading to swelling of the joint and bruising and pain in and around the ankle. Supporting the ankle with tape or an ankle brace can provide some protection, as can 'wobble board' training, but if you do sprain your ankle you should follow the RICE procedure again and consult a doctor if necessary.
