CYCLING INJURIES

Although once threatened with extinction by the car, cycling is once more a growth sport and leisure activity. Whether inspired by the popularity of off-road mountain biking, or sitting and watching the Tour de France, bicycle ownership in the UK has doubled in a decade. Over two million bicycles are sold each year in the UK, and in its war on obesity the Government aims to treble the amount of cycling in the UK by the year 2010. At present 1.1 million people commute to work by bike.

On the competitive side, there are over 2000 road races in the UK each year for bicycles, attracting over 120,000 participants. There are also nearly 2000 time trials, with over 80,000 participants.

Since cycling has a lot to do with pedalling, most of us assume that the common injuries suffered by cyclists are to the legs and knees. But in fact cyclists suffer twice as many injuries to the upper limbs as to the lower ones. This is partly because the wrists tend to take the weight in an accident.

Also, one of the most common cycling injuries is ulnar neuropathy, also delightfully known as 'handlebar palsy'. This is an inflammation of a nerve that runs along the whole length of the arm, providing movement and feeling in the arm and hand. Vibration and jarring from cycling can cause this nerve to become inflamed at either the wrist or the elbow.

If you are able stop cycling for two to four weeks the inflammation will usually die down. Otherwise, you may need to wear splints or padded gloves, and take anti-inflammatory drugs. It will also be worth checking the adjustment of your bike: if your handlebars are too low relative to the saddle, or the saddle is pointing downwards, this can exacerbate the problem by throwing your weight forward onto your hands.
