BRUISES
You typically get a bruise when you knock into something, or something knocks into you.
Bruises occur when a blood vessel beneath your skin is damaged. Blood seeps from the damaged blood vessel and collects under the surface of the skin, resulting in the familiar black or blue mark we call a bruise.
But bruises can happen for other reasons too. Among sports injuries, bruises can result from vigorous exercise when tiny tears appear in blood vessels just beneath the skin.
Older people are particularly susceptible to bruising. As you get older, your skin becomes thinner, and the tissues that support the blood vessels beneath your skin are more easily damaged.
